Wuzhen Water Town
National 5A Tourist Attraction; Permanent Venue Of The World Internet Conference · Tongxiang, Zhejiang
The best known of the Jiangnan canal towns: a grid of black-tiled wooden houses, stone bridges and waterside lanes along the canals south of Lake Tai, with more than a thousand years of history as a silk and trading town linked to the Grand Canal. Wuzhen is divided into scenic zones - Dongzha, the East Zone, with traditional workshops for blue-and-white indigo cloth and rice wine and the former home of the writer Mao Dun, and Xizha, the West Zone, a larger restored district where visitors sleep in canal-side guesthouses and wander lantern-lit lanes after dark. The town reinvented itself as a cultural hub, hosting the annual Wuzhen Theatre Festival, the Muxin Art Museum and the permanent venue of the World Internet Conference. It is about 2-3 hours from Shanghai and 1.5-2 hours from Hangzhou.
