Wuzhizhou Island

Coral Fringed Island Off Sanya, The Main Diving And Watersports Base In Hainan · Sanya, Hainan

A small coral-fringed island off the northeast coast of Sanya, and the main place in China to learn to dive. Wuzhizhou covers barely a square kilometre and is ringed by water clear enough to see the bottom from the ferry, with fringing reef on the sheltered western side, granite headlands on the exposed east, and a wooded interior of tropical trees growing on thin soil. A short ferry crossing from Haitang Bay brings visitors to a jetty in front of a wide sandy beach where most of the day's activity happens: snorkelling and introductory dives over the reef, parasailing, jet skis, banana boats, glass-bottomed boats and a long swing built out over the rocks that has become one of the most photographed spots in Hainan. A road loops the island for electric carts, passing a small temple, a lighthouse and viewpoints over the water; the quieter eastern shore has boardwalks above surf-battered cliffs. Coral protection rules apply, and the island caps visitor numbers, so tickets are best booked ahead in the winter high season.
