Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site
State Historic Site · Laramie, Wyoming
A stone penitentiary built in 1872 on the western edge of Laramie that held federal and territorial prisoners until 1903 — Butch Cassidy among them, serving his only prison term here in the 1890s. The restored cell block, broom factory and warden's house tell the story of frontier crime and punishment, and the grounds host summer events. It is open mainly from spring to autumn. The prison opened in 1872 and closed in 1903, and the state now runs it as a historic site. Butch Cassidy was held here from 1894 to 1896. In 2026 admission was $9 for adults, $4.50 for ages 12-17 and free for 11 and under. It opened daily 9 AM-4 PM from May to September and Thursday to Saturday 10 AM-3 PM from October to April.
