Yakima Valley Wine Region

Wine Region · Yakima, Washington

Washington's first appellation, approved in 1983, running roughly seventy-five miles along the Yakima River in the rain shadow of the Cascades. It is the workhorse of the state wine industry - a very large share of Washington's wine grapes are grown here, along with most of the country's hops - but it has far fewer visitors than Walla Walla and a much more agricultural character. This is orchards, hop yards and vineyards rather than a tasting-room town, and it rewards a driving itinerary rather than a walk.

Yakima Valley AVA, Yakima, Washington, 98902, United States

Tasting rooms generally 11 AM to 5 PM, with many open only Thursday to Sunday and a number by appointment. Winter hours shrink noticeably and some rural producers close entirely from January to March. Harvest runs late August through October. Check individual wineries rather than assuming the region keeps uniform hours - it does not.
