Yalu River Broken Bridge

National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit; Bombed In 1950 And Left As A Memorial · Dandong, Liaoning

Half a bridge, ending in mid-river. The Japanese built this steel crossing from Dandong to Sinuiju between 1909 and 1911, with a section that swung open for shipping; in November 1950, during the Korean War, American aircraft bombed it repeatedly to cut Chinese supply lines, and the North Korean half went into the water. China never rebuilt its side. What remains is four spans reaching out from the Chinese bank to a ragged stump, with the twisted girders and bomb damage left exactly as they were, and you can walk to the end and look across perhaps two hundred metres of water at North Korea - at Sinuiju's waterfront buildings, its Ferris wheel, and whatever is or is not moving on the far bank. Alongside it stands the working Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, still carrying the only regular rail traffic between the two countries. Displays along the walkway cover the war, and boats run up and down the river close to the far shore.
