Yan'an Revolutionary Sites
National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit; The Communist Party’S Wartime Base, 1937 1947 · Yan'an, Shaanxi
The loess valley where the Chinese Communist Party ran itself for ten years, from the end of the Long March in 1935 until 1947, and where the movement that took China was shaped. Yan'an is a town of yellow earth cliffs, and the leadership lived in yaodong - cave dwellings cut into the loess, cool in summer and warm in winter - at a string of sites now preserved across the city. At Yangjialing you can walk into the caves where Mao, Zhou Enlai and Zhu De lived and worked, look at the plain wooden desks and the kang beds, and stand in the hall where the Seventh Party Congress met in 1945 under a banner reading Unite Under the Banner of Mao Zedong. Zaoyuan, the orchard compound, is greener and quieter. Above the river stands the nine-storey Baota Pagoda on its hill, built in the Tang and rebuilt in the Ming, which became the visual shorthand for the whole revolution and appears on banknotes and posters. Most of the sites are free, and the revolutionary museum is substantial.
