Yanagawa

Yanagawa, An Old Castle Town In Southern Fukuoka Threaded By Canals, Best Seen From A Flat Bottomed Punt Poled Past Willows And Old Merchant Houses. Known As The Town Of Water, And For Its Eel Dishes. · Yanagawa, Fukuoka

Yanagawa is an old castle town in southern Fukuoka laced with moat canals, and the draw is the donko-bune, a flat-bottomed punt that a boatman poles slowly past willows, low bridges and old merchant houses for about an hour. The castle keep was lost in 1872, so the town is about water, not stone walls. It also holds the Ohana villa and garden of the Tachibana family, and it is known as the birthplace of the poet Kitahara Hakushu. Locals come for eel steamed over rice, the town's signature dish. It is an easy day from Fukuoka, about 50 minutes by Nishitetsu express, and it suits couples, families and slow travellers who like boats. It is worth the detour for the canal ride in fine weather, but not in heavy rain or midsummer heat, and it is crowded on weekends. Plan a morning to afternoon trip, book a boat early on busy days, and bring cash for the ride, lunch and small shops. Without the boat the town is thin, so check the weather first.
