Yangshuo West Street and the Yulong River
Yangshuo Old Street And The Bamboo Raft River Through The Guilin Karst · Yangshuo, Guangxi
The small town at the end of the Li River cruise and the quieter river valley behind it, together the base for exploring the Guilin karst. West Street is Yangshuo's old lane, a stone-paved strip barely a few hundred metres long that has been trading with travellers for centuries and now runs on backpackers, climbers, cafés, bars, beer-fish restaurants and souvenir shops - loud, commercial and still the heart of the town. Walk or cycle twenty minutes out and the landscape takes over: the Yulong River, a tributary of the Li, winds between limestone towers and bamboo, crossed by old stone bridges, its shallow water carrying flat bamboo rafts poled slowly downstream past water buffalo and rice fields. Rafting the Yulong is the classic Yangshuo half-day, and the valley roads are among the best cycling in China. Around the town are Moon Hill with its natural arch, rock-climbing crags, night shows staged on the water and villages where the karst rises straight out of the fields.
