Yedikule Fortress

A Fortress Of Seven Towers Built Where The Byzantine Golden Gate Met The Sea Walls, Expanded By Mehmed II In 1458 And Used As A Treasury, A Prison And A Place Of Executions, With A Stair Along The Ramparts And Sea Views. A Quiet Monument At The End Of The Land Walls, Away From The Main Tourist Routes · Zeytinburnu, Istanbul

Yedikule Fortress, in Turkish Yedikule Hisari or the Fortress of the Seven Towers, stands in the Zeytinburnu district at the south end of the Theodosian Land Walls, a few hundred metres from the Marmara Sea. Byzantine builders set the Golden Gate here as a ceremonial triumphal entrance, and Mehmed II closed it into a compact fortress in about 1458 (confirm), adding three large towers inside the old wall line to make the seven that give the place its name. Over the centuries it served as a treasury, a state prison and a place of executions, and tradition links the killing of the young sultan Osman II to these walls in 1622 (confirm). Visitors cross a wide courtyard of grass and fallen stone, then climb steep ramparts and tower stairs for views over the Marmara, the ship traffic and the long line of the land walls running north. Opening has changed with restoration work, so the extent of access needs checking (confirm). The site sits well away from the main tourist routes, among small gardens and workshops, and feels quiet and open to the weather.
