Yellowstone National Park

National Park · Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

The first national park in the United States, established in 1872 on a high volcanic plateau in the north-west corner of Wyoming and reaching into Montana and Idaho. It holds roughly half of the world's active geysers among some ten thousand hydrothermal features — Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic Spring and the Mammoth terraces among them — along with the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, the largest high-elevation lake in North America, and the most intact large-mammal ecosystem left in the lower 48 states, where bison, wolves and grizzly bears still range freely. A 142-mile figure-eight road links the main areas, which are hours apart: plan in days, not stops.

2 Officers Row, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, 82190, United States

Open 24 hours, year-round, but most roads close to private vehicles from early November to mid-April. Only the road from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, through Lamar Valley to the Northeast Entrance and Cooke City stays open to cars all winter. Other entrances and roads reopen in stages from mid-April into late May. Guided snowcoach and snowmobile travel runs mid-December to mid-March. Visitor centres, lodges, campgrounds and fuel stations are largely seasonal. No timed-entry reservation; an entrance fee applies, plus a per-person surcharge for non-US residents since 2026.
