Yorkshire Dales National Park (1954): Limestone Pavement And Cliff At Malham Cove, Gordale Scar, Ingleborough, Whernside And Pen Y Ghent (The Three Peaks), Waterfalls, Drystone Walls And Field Barns. Malham Cove Was A Filming Location In A Harry Potter Film. · Malham, England
The Yorkshire Dales National Park, created in 1954, is limestone hill country across North Yorkshire and Cumbria, full of green valleys, waterfalls, drystone walls and stone field barns. Malham Cove is the best-known stop: a curved white cliff of about 80 m with a bare limestone pavement on top, split by deep gaps, and it appeared in a Harry Potter film. Nearby are Gordale Scar, a gorge with waterfalls, and the Three Peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent, a famous long walk. It suits walkers of most levels, photographers and families who like easy valley paths. Honestly, Malham is crowded on sunny weekends and its car parks fill by mid morning, with charges. The pavement is slippery when wet and the gaps are deep enough to break a leg. The weather changes quickly, and rivers flood paths after heavy rain. Plan on a full day for the Malham circuit, and treat anything longer, such as the Three Peaks, as a serious undertaking.

The landscape is open all day and all year, with public footpaths and no gates to the cliffs, falls and fells, although some farm land is closed during lambing in spring and access can change after flooding. Malham National Park Centre and its car park keep limited hours, commonly longer in summer and shorter or closed on some winter days, so confirm before travelling. Village pubs, cafes and shops in Malham, Settle, Hawes and Grassington are seasonal, with fewer opening midweek in winter. Daylight is short from November to February, and paths are unlit, so plan to be down well before dark.
