Young State Park
Michigan State Park · Boyne City, Michigan
Young State Park is on the shore of Lake Charlevoix near Boyne City in northern Michigan. It is a smaller, quieter park than the famous lakeshore parks of the region, with a beach, a campground and access for boating and fishing on one of the state's best inland lakes - confirm which facilities are available this season. The lake is large, warmer than Lake Michigan, and connects through the town of Charlevoix to the big lake, so boaters can go a long way. Boyne City's small downtown is close, and Charlevoix and Boyne Mountain Resort are within a short drive. This park suits families, campers and anglers who want a calm lake day, not dunes or cliffs. Summers are busy on weekends, and ticks and mosquitoes are present in the woods. A Michigan Recreation Passport is needed for vehicles. Allow half a day for a beach visit, or a weekend to camp and use the town as a base. Bring insect repellent and expect a calm, family pace rather than a scenic show.

Michigan state parks are commonly open year-round for day use from about 8 AM to 10 PM, and a Recreation Passport is needed for each vehicle - confirm current hours and any seasonal closures with the Michigan DNR. The campground and beach are busiest from late June to Labor Day, and campsite reservations are strongly advised for summer weekends. Lifeguards are not usually present, so confirm before you assume otherwise. Facilities such as showers, the boat launch and some restrooms may close or reduce service outside summer. Winter visits are quiet, with snow cover and limited services, and the park may be better suited to walking and snowshoeing than to swimming or boating. Expect long daylight in June and early dark in November.
