Yu Garden (Yuyuan)

Major Historical And Cultural Site Protected At The National Level · Shanghai, Shanghai

A Ming-dynasty classical garden in the heart of Shanghai's old walled city, begun in 1559 by the official Pan Yunduan as a place of rest for his elderly parents. Within its walls lie rockeries, carp ponds, pavilions, moon gates and courtyards separated by undulating walls crowned with dragon heads, among them the towering Great Rockery of yellow stone and the Exquisite Jade Rock, a perforated boulder famed across the Yangtze delta. The Hall of Heralding Spring served as headquarters for the Small Swords Society uprising of 1853. Outside the garden, the Yuyuan Bazaar and City God Temple surround the zigzag Nine-Turn Bridge and the Huxinting Teahouse, with dumpling queues, souvenir streets and, at Chinese New Year, one of the biggest lantern festivals in China.
