Yuengling Brewery
National Historic Landmark · Pottsville, Pennsylvania
The oldest operating brewery in the United States, founded in Pottsville in 1829 by a German immigrant named Gottlieb Jüngling who anglicised his name to Yuengling, and still owned by the same family six generations later. It survived Prohibition by making ice cream and near-beer, and it survived the consolidation that killed almost every other American regional brewer by simply not selling. The hillside plant still uses the caves the family hand-dug into the mountain in the 1830s to keep lager cold before refrigeration existed, and the tour takes you into them.
