Yuntai Mountain (Yuntaishan)

UNESCO Global Geopark; National 5A Tourist Attraction, Known For Red Stone Gorge And Tianpu Falls · Jiaozuo, Henan

A gorge-and-waterfall park in the Taihang Mountains of northern Henan, and one of the busiest scenic areas in central China. Its centrepiece is Red Stone Gorge, a narrow canyon of rust-red quartz sandstone laid down more than a billion years ago, where a boardwalk threads between walls only a few metres apart above pools of clear green water - a loop so photogenic that queues form at its entrance on holidays. Elsewhere in the park, Tanpu Gorge strings together a chain of pools and cascades, the Monkey Valley shelters wild macaques, and a long climb up a side valley reaches Tianpu Falls, which drops more than three hundred metres down a cliff face and is often described as the tallest waterfall in China, though it shrinks to a thread in dry spells. The mountain was a retreat for the third-century poets known as the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, and Zhuyu Peak, the highest point, is served by a cable car. A compulsory shuttle-bus network links the valleys, and the park's geology has earned it UNESCO Global Geopark status.
