Yuriria Lake and Convent
A Shallow Lake Dug By Hand In The 16th Century To Hold Water And Fish, With A Fortress Like Augustinian Convent Of San Pablo On Its Shore, Birdlife And Boat Rides. A Quiet Lakeside Town Of South Guanajuato, A Stop On The Road Between Morelia And Guanajuato And A Little Visited Alternative To The Usual Silver City Sights · Yuriria, Guanajuato
Yuriria is a quiet lake town in southern Guanajuato, about 110 km from Morelia and on the road between Salamanca and Guanajuato. In the 16th century the Augustinians had a lake dug by hand to hold water and fish, and on its shore they built the convent of San Pablo, a fortress-like church with thick walls, battlements and a plain, powerful front. The lake is shallow, ringed with reeds, and full of birds, especially in winter when migrants arrive. Boats take visitors out for a short ride, and restaurants by the shore serve local carp and other fish dishes. The plaza is small and pleasant, and the town is very little visited compared with the silver cities. It suits history readers, bird lovers and drivers who want a calm stop on the Morelia to Guanajuato road. It is worth an afternoon for the convent and the fish lunch. It is not worth a long detour if you want swimming or big sights, because the lake is shallow and the town is modest.
