A Gateway To The Kackar Mountains With Mountain Villages And Spring Meltwater · Yusufeli, Artvin

Yusufeli is a mountain town on the Coruh River in the Kackar Mountains of Artvin province, in the far north-east of Turkiye. The river runs through deep gorges and is one of the best known rafting rivers in the country, with fast, cold water in spring when snow melts from the high peaks. The old town was flooded when a large dam closed the valley, and a new Yusufeli was built on higher ground, so today the town is a mix of new streets, a reservoir and mountain scenery (confirm layout). The valley is the gateway to the Kackar range, with trails to the villages of Barhal and Olgunlar, high pastures and summits above 3,000 m, and to medieval Georgian churches in the side valleys. Guesthouses, rafting camps and trekking guides serve visitors, mainly between May and September. Allow a full day on the river or several days of trekking, and confirm all conditions with a local operator before you go.
