Zabid Historic Town

UNESCO World Heritage Site: Historic Town Of Zabid (1993), On The List In Danger Since 2000. A Walled Tihama Town That Was Yemen'S Capital From The 13th To 15th Centuries And A Centre Of Islamic Learning With Its Famous Mosques And The Zabid University. Flat Roofed Brick Houses With Carved Wooden Doors, A Citadel And A Souq. Damaged And Neglected, And In The War Zone · Zabid, Al Hudaydah

Zabid is a historic walled town on the hot Tihama plain, about 100 km south of Hudaydah. It was a centre of Islamic learning for centuries and served as Yemen's capital under the Rasulid dynasty from the 13th to the 15th century. Its Quran schools and university drew students from across the Muslim world. UNESCO listed the town in 1993 and placed it on the List in Danger in 2000, because modern concrete, neglect and now the war have damaged it. The old core holds the Asha'ir mosque, the Iskandariyya mosque with its dome, a citadel, a souq and narrow lanes of honey-coloured brick houses with carved wooden doors and white plaster patterns round the windows. The climate is hot and humid for most of the year, with little relief at night. Zabid lies near the war zone around Hudaydah, so conditions can change without notice. Most governments advise against all travel to Yemen, and a visit today is not a casual plan, so read your own government's current advice before anything else.

Zabid, in the Tihama coastal plain, about 100 km south of Al Hudaydah and 70 km from the Red Sea coast, Zabid, Al Hudaydah, Yemen

The town has no opening hours because it is a living place, and its lanes, houses, doors and outer views are FREE to look at in daylight. The Asha'ir and Iskandariyya mosques are working places of prayer: they are normally CLOSED to non-Muslim visitors during prayer times and on Fridays around the noon prayer, and access depends on the local imam. The citadel is often CLOSED or used for other purposes, so ask locally. The souq is busiest in the morning and quiet in the afternoon heat. Nothing is ticketed on a fixed schedule. Confirm current access with your government and a trusted local contact.
