Zagori and the Vikos Gorge
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Zagori Cultural Landscape (2023) Forty Six Stone Villages And Arched Bridges Above The Vikos Gorge, In The Vikos Aoos National Park · Monodendri, Epirus
Zagori is a mountain district of Epirus, north of Ioannina, where some forty-six stone villages sit on the slopes of the Pindus above the Vikos Gorge. Grey slate roofs, cobbled mule paths, stone stairways and single- and triple-arched packhorse bridges link villages that grew rich on trade and emigration in the Ottoman centuries; in 2023 UNESCO listed the Zagori Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site. The gorge itself, inside the Vikos-Aoos National Park, is often cited as one of the deepest in the world relative to its width, with walls of up to roughly 900 m below the Oxya viewpoint. People come to walk the gorge from Monodendri to Vikos village, to look into it from the Oxya and Beloi viewpoints, to swim in the icy Voidomatis and the Papingo rock pools, to climb to Dragon Lake on Mount Tymfi and to eat pies by a fire in a stone guesthouse. It suits walkers, drivers who like mountain roads and people who want quiet. The honest caveats: it is spread out, public transport is thin, the gorge walk is long and rough, and in winter snow closes paths and some roads.

Open landscape with no gates or fixed hours: the villages, viewpoints and waymarked paths can be visited at any time, but walk only in daylight. The gorge path is best from May to October and is dangerous after heavy rain or with snow and ice. The Agia Paraskevi monastery at Monodendri is usually open in daylight (small donation). Ioannina is about 45 minutes by car; a hire car is close to essential, since regional KTEL buses to the villages run only a few times a week (confirm). Nothing needs booking except guesthouses on summer weekends, Easter, August and Christmas, and a taxi for the end of the gorge walk.
