Zamosc Old Town
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Old City Of Zamosc (1992). A Renaissance Ideal City Planned By The Italian Architect Bernardo Morando For The Chancellor Jan Zamoyski From 1580, With An Arcaded Market Square And A Ring Of Fortifications. Called The Padua Of The North · Zamosc, Lublin
Zamosc was founded from 1580 by the chancellor Jan Zamoyski, who hired the Italian architect Bernardo Morando to build an ideal Renaissance town on a fresh site in south-eastern Poland. The plan is a grid of straight streets around the Great Market Square, which is roughly 100 metres on each side and lined with arcaded merchants' houses in pastel colours. The tall town hall with its fan-shaped stairs stands on the north side, and the Zamoyski palace and the collegiate church lie close by. Bastioned fortifications ring the town, and parts of them can be walked or entered. UNESCO listed the Old City in 1992, and it is often called the Padua of the North. The war left it largely intact, and later restoration was careful. It is small and quiet, a place for a day or an overnight rather than a long stay, and outside summer weekends and holidays the square can feel nearly empty. The Rotunda, a former fort, is now a memorial to people killed in the region during the war.
Great Market Square and the Renaissance planned town, in south-eastern Poland near the Ukrainian border, Zamosc, Lublin, Poland
The Old Town streets, the Great Market Square and the ramparts are open at all hours and free to walk. Museums, the town hall tower and the Rotunda memorial keep their own hours, usually closed one day a week, commonly Monday, and often shorter in winter. The Rotunda is a memorial site, so expect set visiting hours and quiet behaviour, and confirm them before travelling. Cafes and restaurants on the square open mid-morning and stay open into the evening, and in summer the terraces run late. Many small places close early on Sunday evenings outside the high season. Times change by season and on public holidays, so confirm them close to your date. The town hall tower and underground sections may sell out or run by group, so check ahead in July and August.
