Zell am See and Kaprun sit in the Pinzgau valley of Salzburg province, about 90 km south of Salzburg city, and together they make one of Austria's biggest year-round mountain resorts. Zell am See is a small town on the west shore of Lake Zell, with an Esplanade promenade, boat trips, kitesurfing and warm summer swimming at around 22-24 C. Above the town the Schmittenhohe cable car climbs to 1,965 m for views of many peaks. Ten kilometres away at Kaprun, lifts carry visitors to the Kitzsteinhorn glacier at 3,029 m, with the Gipfelwelt 3000 viewing platform, and buses and lifts reach the Kaprun reservoir dams. The honest picture is a polished, rather commercial resort that is expensive in the peak seasons of July, August and the winter ski months, and the glacier ride in particular is costly. In return the scenery is huge, the services are good and it works for both lake days and high mountains. It suits families and active travellers, and a car is useful but not essential because trains, buses and lifts link the main sites.
