Zelve Open-Air Museum
A Set Of Three Valleys Of Tuff Cones Hollowed Into Houses, Chapels, A Mill And A Mosque, Lived In Until The 1950s, With Walking Paths And Tunnels Linking The Rock Rooms. A Less Crowded Rock Site Walk Than The Goreme Museum, With Dust And Steep Climbs · Avanos, Nevsehir
Zelve Open-Air Museum is a rock-cut valley settlement about 10 km from Goreme on the road to Avanos in Cappadocia. Three valleys of tuff cones, cliffs and chimneys are hollowed into houses, stables, chapels, a mill and a mosque with a rock-cut minaret, and families lived here until the early 1950s, when the unstable rock forced a move to a new village nearby (confirm dates). Walking paths and short tunnels link the cave rooms, and carved stairs lead to upper levels with views down the valley. The site is quieter than the Goreme museum and feels more like a ruined village than a gallery, with fewer painted churches and more everyday spaces. Dust, loose stone and steep climbs are part of the visit, and some sections are closed for safety (confirm). Combine it with Pasabag, Avanos and Cavusin for a rewarding half day. Prices, hours and open sections change from year to year, so confirm everything locally before you travel.

Zelve is a ticketed open-air site, normally open daily with longer hours from spring to autumn (roughly 08:00 to 17:00 or 19:00) and shorter winter hours, and a last entry about 30 to 60 minutes before closing (confirm). The cafe and souvenir stalls at the gate keep their own hours. Some tunnels and upper sections may be closed because of rockfall, and the ticket office can close early in bad weather. Coaches arrive from late morning, so the first and last hours are calmest. Confirm times locally before travelling.
