Zhongar-Alatau National Park
Zhongar Alatau State National Natural Park (2010): Alpine Meadows, Glaciers, The Koksu And Tekeli Valleys And Several Waterfalls, With Wildlife That Includes Snow Leopard And Siberian Ibex. Remote, With Border Zone Permits Near The Chinese Frontier. · Taldykorgan, Jetisu
Zhongar-Alatau is a national park set up in 2010 in the Dzungarian Alatau range, east of Taldykorgan on the border with China. It protects alpine meadows, glaciers, the Koksu and Tekeli valleys, and several waterfalls, with spruce forest on the lower slopes and bare rock above. Wildlife includes ibex, marmots and many birds, and snow leopard lives in the high ground, but you should treat a sighting as essentially never. Infrastructure is minimal: the park office is the base, roads are gravel, and trails are often unmarked. The frontier means border-zone permits apply in places, so arrange paperwork in advance and go with a local guide. Spring brings flowers on the lower slopes and summer brings high pastures where herders move their animals. It suits trekkers and people who already know the Jetisu region and want empty mountains, not those who want visitor centres or easy viewpoints. As a detour from Almaty or Taldykorgan it is worth it only if you have a few days and a guide.
Mountain national park in the Dzungarian Alatau on the border with China, east of Taldykorgan, reached by gravel road from Sarkand or Tekeli with the park office as base, Taldykorgan, Jetisu, Kazakhstan
There are no fixed opening hours for the mountains themselves, but access is controlled through the park office and border posts. The office normally works weekday hours and is the place to ask about permits, but exact times are not known here, so confirm by phone through a guide. The practical season runs roughly May to September, when roads and passes are open. In winter snow closes upper tracks and services shrink. Daylight matters most, since there is no lighting, no mobile signal on many trails and mountain weather can turn quickly. Start walks early and be back well before dark.
