Zoar Village
Heritage Village · Zoar, Ohio
A village founded in 1817 by German Separatists fleeing religious persecution, who held everything in common for eighty years and became one of the most successful communal societies in American history before dissolving in 1898. A dozen of the original brick and timber buildings survive as a museum, and the rest of the village is still lived in.
