Zuiderzee Museum
Open Air Village Of More Than 140 Historic Buildings From The Old Zuiderzee Coast Plus An Indoor Museum; Village Open 28 March 25 October In 2026 · Enkhuizen, North Holland
The Zuiderzee Museum in Enkhuizen tells the story of the inland sea that once cut deep into the Netherlands, and of the fishing towns that lived from it until the Afsluitdijk closed it off in 1932 and turned it into the freshwater IJsselmeer. It has two halves. The indoor museum, open since 1948 in a 17th-century warehouse often said to have served the Dutch East India Company, holds a hall of historic wooden boats, costumes, trades and exhibitions. The open-air village, opened in the 1980s, gathers more than 140 buildings moved or rebuilt from towns around the old sea: fishermen's cottages from Urk and Marken, a church, shops, lime kilns, a smokehouse, a rope-walk, a bakery and a harbour with traditional boats. Craftspeople and actors work in the houses, so it feels lived in rather than behind glass. People come for a full, calm day of Dutch village life with the water all around. The honest caveat: the village is open only from late March to late October, and Enkhuizen is at the end of the line, about an hour from Amsterdam.
