A Major Gateway To Switzerland By Rail And Air. · Zurich, Zurich

Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city, about 420,000 people, and a world finance hub. Its old town sits on both banks of the Limmat river at the head of Lake Zurich. On the east bank, Niederdorf has pedestrian lanes, bars and cafes, and the twin-towered Grossmunster stands where Huldrych Zwingli began the Swiss Reformation. On the west bank, Lindenhof hill gives a free view, and Fraumunster holds Chagall's stained-glass windows. Bahnhofstrasse is one of the priciest shopping streets on earth. In summer, people swim from the lake baths and ride boats across the water. The honest picture is a clean, orderly, very expensive city. One day covers the highlights, winter is often grey and foggy, and many visitors use it mostly as a gateway, since Zurich HB station and the airport, 10 minutes away by train, link to the whole country. Restaurant mains cost CHF 30 to 50, so plan a budget before you arrive. Sechselauten in April and the Street Parade in August are the big festival days, and the lake baths are cheap and popular from late spring.
